Objectives of Set Ready / Developing Local Talent
The objective of Set Ready is to provide stepping-stones for new entrants into the Film Industry, and create a bridge between the capital’s communities and high-profile film and TV production. The programme is aimed at entry level talent aged 18+ and includes masterclasses, participatory seminars and Q&As with industry professionals who will provide insight into the industry across a range of disciplines.
Set Ready aims to establish a more joined-up, strategic approach while harnessing local partnerships, to connect talent with opportunities and create training, networking, and learning pipelines. This in turn helps to develop a more inclusive and representative film and TV industry, with its next generation of production talent reflecting the diversity of London’s population.
What Can You Expect / Learning Key Skills
The first pilot training sessions, with 43 participants from across London communities, was led by Matt Gallagher from The Callsheet, and Jude Winstanley, Line Producer and MD of The Unit List. There was practical on set training from Unit Manager Guy Bishop (Maleficent, Bullet Proof) and Location Manager Amie Tridgell (Paddington 2, Rocks, Rush, Wild Rose).
Set Ready has been designed to give entry-level talent the key skills and building blocks to hit the ground running. The learning modules are currently delivered through virtual classroom-based sessions (due to Covid restrictions) and include these key areas:
● Job profiles – Crew/Departments – Hierarchy on set
● On set glossary of terms – “the lingo”
● Getting the job and “pencilling” etiquette
● Booking, payments and call sheets
● Radios and on set communications
● What to expect, runner/marshall tasks
● On set behaviour – industry do’s and don’ts
● Communication confidence, building resilience
Participants were introduced to how the film industry works and how a film set runs and got the chance to meet experts who have worked on films and receive freelancing and CV advice. Equipped with the confidence that these new skills give them, the aspiring industry talent will become familiar with what they can expect from being on set – and what will be expected of them.
Life After Set Ready/ Training Leads to Industry Jobs
On completion of the programme FilmFixer worked with Industry Partners at Netflix, Disney, Apple TV and an array of Indy Production companies to secure paid daillies, and substantive entry level crew positions for the first trained cohort. This offered meaningful and sustainable stepping stones determining a pipeline of opportunity into the Industry.
Set Ready lead and Training Manager at FilmFixer, Sue Russo added: “It is not about who you know, it’s about who knows you – and making yourself visible with confidence. Set Ready will equip new entrants with the language, knowledge and key skills to secure their first jobs and navigate their first steps and days on set”.
