DIY SOS changes lives in Bromley

Last October we were approached by BBC One’s DIY SOS about a ‘Big Build’ they were planning in Bromley.

A wonderful local family – the Newcombes – needed help to transform their home to make it safe and habitable for their youngest son, Arlo. Arlo was born with an incredibly rare lung condition and spent the first two years of his life in intensive care. It was thought that he might never be able to go home, but Arlo defied all of the odds and now lives at home with his family. This means the Newcombes need a home that can accommodate Arlo’s life support equipment and the care that he needs.

This is where the DIY SOS team came in. The wanted to step in and transform the Newcombes’ home to give the entire family the best quality of life possible. Understandably, filming the ‘Big Build’ would require long road closures and a fair amount of upheaval, so we worked closely with Bromley Council to make sure that everything could be pulled off. The Council and the local residents all pulled together in full support of the build and the filming, in a joint effort to turn a local family’s lives around.
